β–Ά CHARACTER
NAME: Mikuni
CANON: Jinba
CANON POINT: Post part two
AGE: 41
BACKGROUND: Part One of Jinba begins in 16th century Japan, in the Warring States period. The difference of course between the actual time period, and the world of JINBA is that the jinba themselves exist. Jinba, essentially centaurs, are half human and half horse, and at one point they were revered as gods from the mountains. Humans lived harmoniously with them, and were taught many things by the jinba, including how to utilize and respect nature. When war became a serious threat, however, humans realized that jinba made powerful "tools" and began to capture and use them as weapons. They were no longer seen as divine creatures, and they were no longer treated as living things so much as objects to be used, traded, sold, and wasted.

Mikuni's story actually begins in Part One. At the time of the story itself, he is 11 years old. War has been constant, and he had never known the peaceful life that jinba once had alongside their human counterparts. Although his life was happy until that point, his village was eventually attacked and razed by a group of humans. Although Mikuni's mother and father bought him time to escape, he ended up coming back to the village later because he had nowhere else to go. It was at that time that he witnessed the humans tearing apart his parents' bodies and devouring them before his eyes. In a rage, Mikuni hunted down and killed some humans and ate them in turn, thus believing from that point on that he could not consume anything but human flesh.

Eventually Mikuni began to gather other orphans like himself and train them as an army. They set up a base camp and used the skills their parents had taught them in order to survive. This way they were able to farm, build tools and necessities, and create a tiny village of sorts. It was Mikuni himself who stumbled upon a young Gonta who was looking for his father (Matsukaze). With Mikuni and his militia's help, Gonta and Matsukaze were reunited and Matsukaze became the first adult in their little village — along with his sister Koume and the "armless" jinba named Kohibari (who would eventually become Koume's mate). They had also taken hostage a jinba working for humans named Hayame. Reluctantly she also joined them and eventually became endeared to their way of life and all of the jinba there. When Matsukaze (and Hayame) discovered Mikuni's "eating habits" (because he always ate alone in a shed away from the base), rather than scorn him, Matsukaze taught him that he was not yet lost. From that point on, he stopped eating people. Their lives were happy and full. However, the peace was not to last. Before she had a change of heart, Hayame had sent one of her allies secretly to inform the humans of the base, and before she confessed to it all, they were already on their way to attack.

Everyone stayed behind to fight and defend their home, however it was Matsukaze and Hayame who made the ultimate sacrifice and saved them all by causing an explosion that would claim both their lives. Mikuni was also presumed to have been caught in the blast and was not seen again ... until 30 years later.

Part Two of Jinba is set in those 30 years later, where Gonta has grown up and Kohibari and Koume's children have all left home except for the youngest son. This son, Tanikaze, had a strong desire to visit a human village. Times have changed and once again jinba and humans mostly live side by side. For jinba who had grown up in the Warring States period, however, it was very difficult to live among them. Gonta, Kohibari, and family continued to live in the mountains, mostly unable to forgive humans for everything they had done (although Kohibari was more sympathetic than Gonta ever was). Kohibari passes away, and Tanikaze decides that he needs to make his journey out of the mountains. Gonta ends up coming with him (after one of Koume's older sons comes back and he can rest assured she will not be alone), and the two are saved by a mysterious arrow ... which turns out to belong to Mikuni!

After their reunion, Mikuni admits that he was also on his way to a human village and decides to accompany Tanikaze in Gonta's place (although Gonta ends up coming along anyway). He says that after the blast, he was found by an old human man -- who called himself a monkey -- and his wounds were treated. Although initially hostile to the man for obvious reasons, Mikuni did heal up and found once again that he had nowhere else to go. He returned to their old village to find, of course, all of his companions gone and the village overgrown and abandoned. He became close to the human man and lived a peaceful life with him, deciding that while he can't forgive humans, not all of them are evil. The man drowned after saving a fawn in the river, and Mikuni was left alone once more. So they all traveled to the human village together.

There they meet Sha Gozen who is in the business of uniting humans and jinba. She finds the group jobs, they make friends, they fall in love, and so on. Mikuni is more or less a supportive friend figure, helping Gonta adjust to the life while he works alongside him in the lumber yard. When Gonta decides to return to the mountains, Mikuni does as well. However, he leaves the newlywed Gonta and his bride Konoha (their former lumber yard boss) and goes searching for his lost companions. He does visit them and their growing brood of children frequently.

PERSONALITY: Mikuni is described as striking, a jinba of ebony black with sleek long hair, bright golden eyes, and an elegant face (hiding a super buff body). What hides within is a reformed man who was once at the ends of his ropes and who had believed he had been replaced by a demon for the dark path he'd taken.

There is an eerie quality about Mikuni that has endured through the years. While he was a regular, happy child, the trauma he suffered through his parents' demise warped him. He became ruthless and unforgiving, a very intense individual who could probably scare a good handful of his enemies (and allies...) away with one of his wide-eyed stares that seems to reach into one's very soul. While his distaste of humans did shift eventually, he will always have an adverse opinion overall and feels strongly that they can only be trusted on a case-by-case basis. In his older years he is much more accepting, but he probably feels more difficulty in the changing times than he lets on. He was traumatized and subjected to some horrible situations (not even counting the most horrible of all) so change is something uncertain and wary for him. For a long time, he did not even believe that he himself was capable of change.

Because he became the leader of an army and a small village, he matured much faster and seemed far beyond his 11 years. As a general, he was serious and fierce, his commands resolute and resolve unshakable. He is tactful and intelligent, able to come up with strategies on the fly, and this ability is fueled mostly by feelings of rage against the actions of humans. He was a reliable leader and inspired his soldiers daily in every task they took on. He continues to be inspiring to his friends once they are reunited in adulthood.

When it comes to people he cares about, Mikuni has a big heart. The army of orphans he amassed was family to him. Enough so that even 30 years later, he has taken it upon himself to try and find each and every one of them who may still be living. He pulled Gonta from a burning village and immediately welcomed him as one of their own, creating a lifelong friendship and understanding between them. He is incredibly loyal, willing to give up his life for those he loves and protects, and is deeply reverent to anyone who ever made an impact in his life. Although he technically saved Matsukaze's life, he feels it is the other way around, and maintains a deep respect for Matsukaze long after the jinba's death. He bonds with Tanikaze without question, because Kohibari and Koume were family to him too. And he is even willing to feel indebted to a human after that human saved him and gave him purpose again. He comes to care for his human "family" so much that he would even stick up for the "good" humans despite once being consumed by hatred for them.

It's true that he and Gonta do bump heads due to this. Gonta feels that humans are irredeemable regardless of what good they do, and Mikuni has learned to forgive (some of) them. However, the two of them share a very special bond that is perhaps deeper than brothers. He is fiercely protective of his old friend, and eventually becomes a comfort to Gonta when nothing else seems to calm him. There is very little he wouldn't do for Gonta in particular. Around everyone else, Mikuni takes on a more mischievous role. He likes to poke fun and make jokes -- even if the jokes are creepy sometimes, that's just how he is -- and even instigate a little harmless trouble. He often teases Konoha and Gonta but also watches fondly as their relationship forms. He is much the same with Tanikaze and his love, cheering them on as a friendly uncle would. Eventually, Sha Gozen jokes that he and she are the only ones left over so they should probably get hitched. The idea horrifies Mikuni a little, so even if it's for comedic relief it's safe to say that he's pretty okay in his supporting role. It is likely he doesn't feel capable of settling down in a traditional sense after everything that's happened.

In his older years, Mikuni is still unflappable but more easygoing. He has his intense moments still (+ the creepy stare), but he kind of rolls with the punches. Konoha initially mistakes him for Gonta's wife and he doesn't care. You want him to wear horse pants? He's fine with that (though a Mikuni in samurai armor is also impressive). Job at the lumber yard seemed a little daunting at first, but once introduced to the proper tools, he'll get down and gritty. After years of anger, he seems to have smoothed out and found more peace. He still has a full range of expressions and emotions, and will certainly not allow himself to be stepped on or used inappropriately.

And much can still be said about Mikuni's sense of determination and his resilience. He has lived a pretty hard but lengthy life so far and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. There will always be an air of sadness in Mikuni. He is one of few remnants of a much harsher world. He has lived through a changing of times and it has been challenging more than anything, but he remains loyal to the jinba and insistent on staying alive despite all odds.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Mikuni does not have any powers, however since he is a jinba, he is much stronger than a human or horse (and he's stronger than he looks anyway). He is also extremely skilled in leadership, battle strategy, archery, and some swordsmanship. He has experience in farming and in hauling lumber and such too! He's very useful even in his old jinba age.
